Using Units

So far we did not bother about Units, but Units are Important because they connect the three dimensional world of 3ds max with the physical world.

Units define different measurement systems. In 3ds max by default the Generic Units is set, beside it we can use Feet and Inches in both decimals and fractions. Metric units range from millimeters to kilometers.

Procedure for setting up Units

  1. Customize menu > Units Setup
  2. Units Setup Dialog Box Appears
  3. The Units Setup Dialog Box gives the choice between generic units and standard units (feet and inches, or metric). We can also create custom units, which are used when creating an object.
  4. Click on desired option button and then click on OK button.
  5. When we change units, the program displays measurements in the new unit.

If you want to use Feet and Inches, we suggest to choose following option.

at this setting for 12'-7"

You will enter 12'7 from Keyboard.

for 14'-4.5", you will enter 14'4.5 from Keyboard.

You require to use the prime symbol (') for indicate feet. But you do not need to enter quotation marks (") to specify inches. Software identifies number without any symbol as Inches. Although if you enter 14'4.5" from Keyboard, this entry will also work well.

Important : If you plan to import AutoCAD drawing in 3ds max, use following rules.
